In 1307, Austrian forces oppress the Swiss people. William Tell swore to never use violence again after his time in the Crusades, but he is forced to join the rebellion to stop the bloodshed. As punishment, Governor Gessler forces Tell to shoot an apple at the head of his son Walter, who escapes unharmed due to his skill with a crossbow. Gessler takes Tell and Princess Bertha of Habsburg captive, but they quickly escape. Tell returns to lead a rebellion against the Austrian invaders, seeking revenge after the sacking of his city and the death of his wife.
